The scrutable user model and beyond

چکیده
This paper describes the um scrutable user modelling approach and explores the extension of the approach and philosophy into the teaching strategy. Essentially, um represents the evidence about the student in a form that can be scrutinised either directly, or via a graphical interface. This form of the student model is reusable by different teaching systems and other applications. It is only at the time-of-use, that the application resolves the student model, deciding the values of the components. The application can make use of its own resolver and, in particular, different applications may use different resolvers. Essentially, this means that the student scrutinising or examining their student model should logically be able to do this in terms of the way that the model is used in a teaching system. Another way to see this is that student should be able to explore the meaning of the student model in action, as it is used by a teaching system and in terms of the effects of the model. In this paper, we explore the design of a scrutable teaching strategy since this is the core of decision making process in a teaching system. Indeed, if we regard the operation of the teaching process as an important effect of the student model, then scrutinising the teaching strategy is a logical requirement of a scrutable but reusable and flexible student model.

Evaluating Scrutable Adaptive Hypertext
Adaptive hypertext systems personalise documents to meet the individual’s particular preferences, knowledge and goals. There is a debate over how much control should be given to the user as well as how much transparency there should be to the inner workings of the system. Some adaptive systems make the user model available to the user. We propose transparency and control should extend beyond th...
متن کاملA Scrutable User Modelling Infrastructure for Enabling Life-Long User Modelling
User Modelling is the core component for the majority of personalisation systems. By keeping a model for every user, a system can successfully personalise its content and utilise available resources accordingly. While researching the literature, one can recognize the importance of achieving interoperability across various platforms and systems while attempting to personalise a large diversity o...
متن کاملEvaluating Three Scrutability and Three Privacy User Privileges for a Scrutable User Modelling Infrastructure
This paper describes the evaluation of a Scrutable User Modelling Infrastructure. SUMI is intended to form a service to allow users to share their user models from social e-networking and e-commerce providers to educational systems. The model is scrutable, meaning users can inspect and correct the data that is held about them, and implements privacy policies so that users can control how their ...
متن کاملScrutable User Models and Personalised Item Recommendation in Mobile Lifestyle Applications
This paper presents our work on supporting scrutable user models for use in mobile applications that provide personalised item recommendations. In particular, we describe a mobile lifestyle application in the fine-dining domain, designed to recommend meals at a particular restaurant based on a person’s user model. The contributions of this work are three-fold. First is the mobile application an...
متن کاملIntrospectiveViews: An Interface for Scrutinizing Semantic User Models
User models are a key component for user-adaptive systems. They represent information about users such as interests, expertise, goals, traits, etc. This information is used to achieve various adaptation effects, e.g., recommending relevant documents or products. To ensure acceptance by users, these models need to be scrutable, i.e., users must be able to view and alter them to understand and if...
